Judges

  • David E. Baugnon
    David Baugnon is a filmmaker and screenwriter. His directing credits include the feature documentary Art in the Face of War, the short documentary Matisyahu (winner of the Grand Prize at AOL Moviefone Short Film Festival, 2006), the short documentary White Bait and the short comedies Born Slippery and Call Time. David teaches screenwriting at Writers Boot Camp and The Pratt Institute and has two feature scripts, Code of Ethics and Echo Charlie, currently in development with Producer Jeff Apple (The Recruit, In the Line of Fire).
  • Valerie Blakey
    Valerie Blakey is a Jackson native and is finishing up her degree at Texas A&M. She spends most of her free time working on video and graphics projects for the Texas Aggie Corps of Cadets Association. She previously worked with the Mississippi Film Office and has been one of the lead instructors for the Canton Young Filmmakers Workshops for the last five years. Valerie’s an avid fan of NBC's The Office - sometimes believing that she is friends with the people in Scranton, PA and she enjoys long walks on the beach and candle light dinners.
  • Sam Wainwright Douglas
    Sam Douglas is a graduate of New York University. In April 2005 he completed the feature length documentary The Holy Modal Rounders…Bound To Lose, currently playing theatrically in the U.S. and Europe and available on DVD. His film Raise the Roof won the documentary prize at the 2003 Crossroads Film Festival. Sam also works as an editor and his work has been broadcast on HBO, A&E, The Discovery Channel, The Learning Channel, The Food Network, among others. Currently Sam is teaching the Introduction to Editing class at the University of Texas in Austin and producing Snakebit, a feature documentary about Samuel Mockbee and his work as the founder of Auburn University’s Rural Studio.
  • Andy Harper
    Andy Harper is the director of the Center of Documentary Projects at the University of Mississippi. He holds a PhD in History from Northern Arizona University and teaches History and Documentary Studies classes. Andy is currently documenting the preparations for the first presidential debate that will be held at the University of Mississippi in September.
  • Michael Kaczkowski
    Michael Kaczkowski is an artist/writer originally from New York, studied Film and Fine Art at the School of Visual Arts. He’s written numerous screenplays, directed several short films and plays and has written an original script for Lions Gate DVD. Michael is president of Alatheia Prosthetics where he oversees the creation of his own line of custom life-like prostheses for amputees throughout the globe.
  • Lorena Manríquez
    Lorena Manríquez is an independent filmmaker and president of Andina, LLC. Currently she is producing, directing, and writing her first feature documentary Ulises’ Odyssey. Lorena was selected to attend the 20th annual Sundance Independent Producer’s Conference, was awarded a fellowship to the Latino Producers Academy by NALIP and received a fellowship by CPB/PBS to attend their Producers Academy at WGBH. Lorena was nominated for the IFP/Fledgling Fund Emerging Latino Award during the 2007 IFP Market.
  • Scott Dixon McDowell
    Scott McDowell has been teaching film production and screenwriting for 20 years at The University of Southern Mississippi. He has produced a number of short films and authored several screenplays including In Morning Calm, which won the MGM/UA Screenwriting competition and was later optioned. For the past several years he has been studying the work of Academy Award and Pulitzer Prize winning screenwriter and dramatist, Horton Foote and is currently in post-production on a feature length documentary about Foote’s life and career.
  • Cynthia Newhall
    Cynthia Newhall is a member of the Directors Guild of America. She also has an MA in Educational Policy Studies. She currently works as a writer for the Mississippi ACLU and chairs the marketing committee for the Central Mississippi Blues Society. Artist and activist, Newhall’s documentary work has garnered the Gabriel Humanity Award; the Primetime Emmy, DuPont-Columbia and Peabody awards; 5 Emmys; and 22 Emmy nominations. From MTV to PBS, Cynthia’s evocative style is recognized for its stark photo-realism and lyrical metaphor.
  • David Orr
    David Orr is the filmmaking founder and president of Possumtown Pictures, an independent production company specializing in motion pictures and television. David gained recognition with his award-winning feature film Blossom Time, starring Laurel Holloman. After years of production experience and executive stints at the studios, David recently relocated the company to Mississippi and is in preparation for his next film.
  • Mark Shilstone
    Mark Shilstone is a native of Long Beach, Mississippi and a graduate of the University of Southern Mississippi in Radio, Television, and Film. He recently worked as a producer on the television shows Trading Spaces on TLC and Carter Can on HGTV.
  • Edward Saint Pe´
    Edward Saint Pe´ has worked in TV as an on-air meteorologist, producer and writer for the past 20 years. He founded WeatherVision, the first local TV Weathercast via satellite service, in 1991, which produces weathercasts for hundreds of TV affiliates across the nation. Founder of Jackson Teleport, Mississippi's only fixed earth station Teleport, he has worked with NBC, CBS, FOX, CNBC, MSNBC and CNN delivering Mississippi newsmakers back to the network studios. Saint Pe’ also founded WLEZ FM a community FM radio station. Edward’s first film, Orbis Romanus, will begin touring the festival circuit this summer.
  • Joe York
    Joe York has produced 13 short films for the University of Mississippi's Center for Documentary Projects and recently completed his first feature-length documentary film, Above the Line: Saving Willie Mae’s Scotch House, which chronicles the 18-month rebuilding of a famed culinary landmark in post-Katrina New Orleans. His first book of photography, With Signs Following: Photographs from the Southern Religious Roadside, was published by the University of Mississippi Press in August, 2007. Joe is the producer of Highway 61, a weekly radio show that airs on Mississippi Public Broadcasting.
